Football was played in Mladá Boleslav as early as end of the 19th century, but it was not until 1902 that the members of Studentská XI registered their club with the Czech football association, which had been founded in Prague a year earlier. The city´s first decade of the 20th century witnessed the emergence and subsequent fadeout of numerous teams seeking to play friendly matches. During the period of 1918-1939, Mladá Boleslav´s greatest football rivalry was between the clubs Mladoboleslavský SK and Aston Villa Mladá Boleslav. The third most popular club was Slavoj Mladá Boleslav.
Their players created the foundation for the Sokol AZNP Mladá Boleslav. AZNP (Atomobilové Závody Národní Podnik, the Automobile Companies National Enterprise) symbolised the first link between football and local automobile factory. In 1953-1959 and 1961-1964, Spartak AZNP Mladá Boleslav played in the 2nd league division. Beginning in 1966 until 1990, the club was named TJ Auto Škoda Mladá Boleslav, and mostly played in the second and third highest league division. In the 1977-1978 season the team fought their way to the final of the national cup, where they were was defeated by Baník Ostrava from the first division. Since 1981, they have battled with other very high quality second division teams to advance to the first division, but to no avail.
In 1990, the team – just like all the other athletes in Mladá Boleslav – lost the financial support of the automobile company for six years, and FK Mladá Boleslav fell through two more divisions to the division. They were not able to claw their way back to Division II until 1999. However, the new millennium had a brighter future in store for Mladá Boleslav football. They gradually secured the support of the city, the Škoda automobile company, as well as that or other local companies. In the 2003 – 2004 season, the team won the Division II league, and advanced to join the Czech football elite for the first time in its history. Since 2004, they have played in the highest football division in the Czech Republic. In 2011, they won the second most important domestic trophy for the first time: the National Cup. They have advanced to European cups seven times in the years 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
FK Mladá Boleslav has been present in the Czech Republic’s top league since Autumn 2004. Only during its first year in 2004/05, did it have a hard time with preservation. The team has been ranking among the nation’s best football clubs. In the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 they contested the highest places in the league and repeatedly qualified for European cups. In the next three years, Mladá Boleslav failed to qualify for the Euro cups in spite of having good starting positions and missed out in the league’s final standings. Whatever the results, the team would remain in the top 16 of the league.
FK Mladá Boleslav made a come-back to the European scene in 2011 having won the Czech Cup; reappearing in 2012 as the holder of the league’s fourth position. After another one-year stand-down, the results have repeatedly won the squad the right to appear in the qualifications for Europa League in the past three years. In the 2013/14 season, the team won third place in the Czech league, in 2014/15 it was fourth, in 2015/16 the team was again fourth and also the winner of the Czech Cup.
