Mladá Boleslav travelled in Moravia with very weakened squad. The players also had little time for regeneration after a cup match. And, moreover, when we add temporary blindness of the referee when judging the intervention against Holub deep in the penalty area of Olomouc, the league point hung to high for the Uhrin's team to reach them. "We missed key players in Olomouc more than had thought initially," said Uhrin after the last league match of this year.
Weakened Mladá Boleslav team suffered a defeat from Olomouc with a two-goal difference in spite of the fact that it was no less than equal opponent. But the team paid for missing scoring opportunities and loss of good luck that, on the contrary, the team from Olomouc did not miss.
The dramatic duel between Mladá Boleslav and Paris Saint Germain ended by a goalless draw i.e. by the least favoured football result. But at the same time, there were enough scoring opportunities during ninety minutes on both sides. The Paris head-coach Lacombe calculated that his team prepared more chances, however the present audience saw the players of Boleslav more times in scoring positions in front of the rival's goal.
Both teams were clear about the matter before the match. The team that will lose will be eliminated from the competition for qualifying in the spring stage of the UEFA Cup. Victory would almost guarantee qualification and tie would certainly reduce, even if not destroy completely, hopes of both teams. The coaches promised offensive struggle, the players started cautiously but created some scoring chances with time, however they missed all of them. With respect to the fact that no goal was scored also in the match between Panathinaikos and Rapid Bucharest, the goalless tie kept in the qualifying game both Mladá Boleslav and Paris Saint Germain.
the smiling Guy Lacombe did look at all like the trainer of an unsuccessful team, which is what Paris Saint Germain momentarily is, both in the French league and in the European Cup. Thirteenth place in a league with twenty members and last place among the five participants in group G of the UEFA Cup do not at all correspond with the ambitions of the big Paris club. At the meeting with journalists on the eve of the match with Mladá Boleslav the Czech stopper of the Paris team, David Rozehnal, arrived with trainer Guy Lacombe.
The last preparations for the match between FK Mladá Boleslav and Paris Saint Germain were the Wednesday training session in the Mladá Boleslav municipal stadium. From 4.30 p.m. eighteen players and three goalkeepers were training under the guidance of Uhrin. The eighteen-member group of Paris coach Lacombe began training shortly before 6 p.m.
In the second half of 2006 Mladá Boleslav played so many important and demanding matches that the mention of the importance of this last day in November sounds like a worn-out phrase. But of course for the much-wanted promotion to the spring phase of the UEFA Cup the duel between Mladá Boleslav and Paris Saint Germain really is of key importance, which applies for both sides. The one who loses leaves the game. The Mladá Boleslav trainer Dušan Uhrin is well aware of this.
Guy Lacombe, the trainer of Paris Saint Germain, is one of the legends of French football. He was born on 13 June 1955, played football at international level for thirteen years and wore the club strips of Nantes, Lens, Tours, Toulouse, Rennes, Lille and Cannes. He shot 55 league goals and in 1984 became an Olympic champion. He began his career as a trainer in AS Cannes (1989-95) and continued in Toulouse (1995-99), Gincamp (1999-2002), FS Sochaux (2002-05) and now he is the coach of Paris Saint Germain. He led Paris SG into the UEFA European Cup through victory in the French National Cup.
Both teams' last rehearsals for UEFA Cup match did not exactly work out the way Mladá Boleslav and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) planned. The points to be distributed on Thursday are very important for the tournament. Both Mladá Boleslav and PSG only scored draw results in their home League duels. The Czech team had an uneasy fight when battling with the League's last standing team, FC Slovácko to gain a 2:2 result. Similarly, PSG, on a visit to FC Nantes, third from the end of their League standings, drew only a 1:1.
Is a three-day a break long enough to regenerate the stamina of a professional football player? Maybe it is, unless, of course, the travel fatigue is omitted. Only a mere sixty hours elapsed between the team got off their bus after their flight from Bucharest, Romania, and the kick off of the League match with Slovácko. "After we arrived from Bucharest, we had a very, very short time to prepare the team for the match. If we had had more time, say, a week, it is my belief we would have beaten the Slovácko," Coach Uhrin says level-headedly. It is to be noted that the team only draw the Sunday match with Slovácko (1:1).
